Tips for searching for commentaries

  • Despite what you might think, searching for commentaries rather than commentary is actually better. The subject heading in the book record is Commentaries.
  • Once you find one commentary in a series you're interested in, you should be able to locate all the books we have for that commentary series by clicking on the series link in the book record. It should look something like this:
    The Anchor Yale Bible commentaries ;

Tips for requesting commentaries

  • Be sure to check that the commentary series includes one on the book of the Bible you are researching. Not all commentary series are complete or include every book of the Bible.
  • Because commentaries are organized by book of the Bible, and then further by chapter and verse, please identify which book, chapter, and verses you are looking for in the Notes section of the ILL request form.

Commentaries only available in print

Each link will take you to the complete commentary listings in the library catalog. Quotes below are from Michael J. Gorman's Elements of Biblical Exegesis: A Basic Guide for Students and Ministers, (Peabody, MA: Hendrickson, 2001).       BS 511.2 G67 2001
